"I have long admired ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s innovative pursuits for equity and justice in education. ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV centers equity, excellence, Indigeneity, community, and cultures of innovative inquiry."
Postdoctoral Fellow Profile: Amber Moore
Education Postdoctoral Fellow in the Faculty of Education
I am a feminist educator who is very excited to start my postdoc at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV this fall! My research interests include adolescent literacies, feminist pedagogies, teacher education, arts-based research, rape culture, trauma literature (particularly YA sexual assault narratives) and, as I will explore in this postdoc project, fanfiction written in response to YA rape texts. Outside of school life, I love cooking, hiking, writing poetry, listening to audiobooks, and a good Netflix binge with my partner.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I have long admired ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s innovative pursuits for equity and justice in education. ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV centers equity, excellence, Indigeneity, community, and cultures of innovative inquiry. I am especially inspired by ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s public pedagogies and scholarship. More particularly though, I have to say that my ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV supervisor, Dr. Elizabeth Marshall, is the main reason why I am so thrilled to come to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV; she is a brilliant scholar and generous collaborator and friend. I am delighted to continue working with her on this project.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
This research is an extension of my previous two graduate projects where I focus on the pedagogical potential of sexual assault narratives and advocate for rape culture to be explicitly addressed in education, especially K-12 English Language Arts curriculum. For this postdoc project, I will investigate how storied resistances against rape culture are enacted online through young adult (YA) fanfiction that reimagines trauma experiences. Because these texts are largely produced by and for adolescent writers and readers, I am really excited to, in a way, return to my English teacher roots a bit and immerse myself in the activist and creative expressions of young people.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
Presently, I am just looking forward to getting started and joining this amazing community in fall 2021!
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
I am so fortunate to have my postdoc project funded by The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, which I will take up when I begin my program at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV this fall. This award has completely amplified and shifted my attitude towards this next phase of my career; instead of beginning with trepidation, I just feel tremendously grateful and supported. I am so appreciative of everyone who helped me to pull my application package together and its success has reminded me that I am surrounded by amazing mentor scholars.
