Tara Holland, PhD
Amundsen Fellow
May 2022 - December 2023
Tara Holland is a Lecturer in the Geography Department and School of Environmental Science, and the Faculty of Environment Teaching Fellow. Her teaching is interdisciplinary and student-centred, and she is continually working to develop pedagogy and curriculum that fosters student motivation, engagement, and metacognition. She has completed three Teaching and Learning Development Grant projects, researching the impact of two-stage collaborative exams on student anxiety and performance; instructional interventions that improve climate literacy in a first-year breadth climate change course; and the impact of weekly formative assessments on engagement, motivation, and learning in remote courses.
In her current Faculty Teaching Fellow role and prior position as a Science Teaching and Learning Fellow at UBC, Dr. Holland has mentored faculty and graduate students in the development of their teaching practice. Her research into pedagogy and teaching development has been published in College Teaching and the Journal of College Science Teaching. Dr. Holland is currently developing a Teaching Squares program for peer teaching observation and reflection in the Faculty of Environment, and her Amundsen Fellowship project will involve assessing the programs effectiveness in impacting faculty teaching practices and attitudes/beliefs about teaching.
