Statement from global academics on the death of Mahsa Amini and people’s uprising in Iran

October 19, 2022

We are deeply saddened by the brutal death of 22-year-old Mahsa (Zhina) Amini in the hands of the so-called Morality Police in Iran. Her untimely and tragic death represents the continued repression of Iranian women in particular and Iranian civil society in general. Outraged by her death, Iranian people from all walks of life have taken to the streets, in the past few days, to not only grieve Mahsa’s death and express sympathy with her family, but to once again protest against the repressive measures of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The new wave of nationwide protests in Iran indicates the latest episode in the continued movement of dignity and quest for a free and better life, as it unfolds in the movements of women, workers, university students, teachers, retirees, minorities, merchants and middle classes. This movement is being led by women who constitute a formidable social force. The key motto of this movement, “Woman, Life, Freedom,” captures the social imagination of Iranians who are struggling for a bright future. The protest movement indicates the fact that it has been a long time since Iranians have outgrown their static and unresponsive state and its medieval measures and rules.

We express our deepest condolences to Mahsa Amini’s family and the families of the brave souls who lost their lives in this recent protest movement and stand in solidarity with the Iranian peoples and their continued fight for liberation, justice, and dignity.
