GSWS Feminist Book Club - August 2023
GSWS Feminist Book Club's August Book:
Bunny
Mona Awad
Penguin (2019)
Bunny by Mona Awad inspired some very interesting conversations among the group. Bunny is written from the perspective of an unreliable narrator -- the main character Samantha Heather Mackey gets involved with the other women in her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program and she soon discovers they're more sinister than they seem.
Many in the book club felt the novel was engaging, interesting, and made us question the motive of women's friendships and women's identity. Others felt the unreliable narration was more confusing than challenging, and the novel's plot was bloated/repetitive.
Overall, we rated the book an average of 2.5-4.5 stars out of 5 stars. Regardless of if you enjoyed the book, it remains a great way to inspire difficult and moving conversations about friendships, love, identity, and creative writing education.
