Scholarships & Awards
Undergraduate students in the Department of Global Humanities are eligible for a number of scholarships, awards, and grants offered by the department. This funding is made available thanks to the generous donors who have created endowments to support Global Humanities and its outstanding students.

Scholarships
These scholarships recognize outstanding academic achievements, and are available to Canadian and International students. Students are nominated by the Department of Global Humanities and, therefore, do not need to apply.
Father Michael Bach Memorial Scholarship ($1,600)
The Father Michael Bach Memorial Scholarship is awarded in any term to one or two undergraduate students enrolled in either the third or fourth year of the Global Humanities program. Friends, relatives, and colleagues of the late Father Michael Bach have established an endowment fund to support one or more scholarships in the Global Humanities program. The scholarship will be granted by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee on the nomination of the Department in recognition of outstanding scholastic ability.
Mahatma Gandhi Humanitarian Scholarship ($1,000)
The Mahatma Gandhi Humanitarian Scholarship, valued at $1,000, is offered annually by the kind generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Devendra P. Goel to a student who has demonstrated overall excellence in the Global Humanities Program. The scholarship will be granted by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee on the nomination of the Department in recognition of outstanding scholastic ability.
Professor André Gerolymatos Undergraduate Scholarship in Hellenic Studies ($1,000)
The Professor André Gerolymatos Undergraduate Scholarship in Hellenic Studies is awarded annually in any term to one or more *full-time undergraduate students who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree either with a declared major, joint major, minor, or extended minor in Global Humanities, are enrolled in either the Hellenic Studies Certificate or the Hellenic Studies Concentration programs, and are in excellent academic standing. The scholarship was established to support Professor Gerolymatos’ vision of Hellenic Studies as a broader, interdisciplinary project covering the study of Greece, from antiquity to the modern age.
*If the student is enrolled in a minimum of 6 or more units of standard graded courses and meets all other eligibility requirements. The student has to provide a letter from CAL confirming that the student is registered with the Centre.
Department Awards
These awards are administered by either the Department of Global Humanities or , and students must apply to be considered.
Dutton Essay Award ($1,100)
One or more awards, valued at a minimum of $1,100 each, will be awarded annually in any term to undergraduate students who are enrolled *full-time in a degree program at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV; are in good academic standing; and have written an exemplary essay in any Global Humanities course at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV in the previous three terms. Applications must be submitted to the Department of Global Humanities (humadvis@sfu.ca) by April 30th and must include an essay written as part of any Global Humanities course at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV that is at least 1500 words in length. The award will be granted by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee upon the nomination of the Chair, Department of Global Humanities, or a designate.
*If the student is enrolled in a minimum of 6 or more units of standard graded courses and meets all other eligibility requirements. The student has to provide a letter from CAL confirming that the student is registered with the Centre.
Mahatma Gandhi Annual Student Award ($1,500)
The Mahatma Gandhi Annual Student Award is valued at $1,500 and will be granted annually to a current or newly admitted *full-time ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV student in good academic standing on the basis of demonstrated community service and leadership. The purpose of this award is to recognize and honour those ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV students who, in the spirit of Gandhi’s work, have been active in voluntary community service in areas related to peace, justice, and human rights.
Note: the recipient will be recognized at the Gandhi Jayanti and, therefore, must be available for the garlanding (October 2 @ 5:15pm) and award (October 3 @ 6:00pm) ceremonies.

External Awards
These awards are administered by ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV.
Gordon M. Shrum Undergraduate Medal
Awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student in any faculty, who has completed the requirements for a Bachelor's degree during the preceding summer, fall or spring term. The award is based on degree completion, with high academic standing, of six terms or the equivalent of 60 credit units or more at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, as well as participation in extra-curricular activities demonstrating outstanding qualities of character and unselfish devotion to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV.
Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Inclusion, Democracy and Reconciliation
Awarded to the undergraduate student who has maintained the highest academic standing in their coursework completed at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV in a certificate or post-baccalaureate diploma, and who, by participating in extracurricular activities, has shown outstanding qualities of character and unselfish devotion to the community.
Undergraduate Dean’s Medal
Awarded to a graduating student from each faculty. The dean of the respective faculty will recommend a student who is from the top five percent of graduating students within that faculty. The top five percent is defined by cumulative GPA.
Governor General’s Silver Medal
Awarded to the two undergraduate students who achieve the highest scholastic standing upon graduation from a bachelor's degree program.
