In Memoriam: Brian Fawcett, ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV English alumnus
The Department of English sends its condolences to the family and friends of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV English alumnus Brian Fawcett, who passed away on February 27th, 2022.
Originally from Prince George, Brian left his hometown to attend ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. He completed a Master of Arts in English at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV and worked as a teaching assistant in the department. He went on to become an award-winning author of more than 20 books of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. He also worked as a columnist for The Globe and Mail.
Professor Tom Grieve (retired) shares his memories about Brian:
Brian Fawcett was a friend of mine from a long time back: a fellow Prince Georgian, Brian dated my older sister and married Sharon Thesen, my home room best buddy in high school; we were ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV grad students and office mates together, collaborated over a couple of literary journals, "Archai" and "NMFG (No Money from the Government)", played a lot of softball together (The East End Punks) in the Cosmic League, shared a lot of dinners and evenings with mutual friends where we did our best to stumble through out-loud readings of most of Shakespeare, including (Brian's idea),an annual on-the-day performance over many years of A Midsummer's Night Dream (he was a pretty good Bottom). Sadly, we lost touch after Brian moved to Toronto years ago. He was a passionate intellectual, poet, writer, historian, and activist. His works made a mark and will live on.
