Professor Matthew Hussey wins 2021-2022 Cormack Teaching Award
Last week, Professor Matthew Hussey received a 2021-2022 Cormack Teaching Award from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
He spoke during the 10th annual Cormack Teaching Symposium about the challenges of remote teaching during COVID-19. He noted that there is form and content in teaching. During the pandemic, form (e.g. empathy, understanding reactions and body language, etc.) was what got lost.
To address this, Hussey focused on fostering "a collaborative community of critical and creative readers and thinkers." For example, he encouraged non-traditional approaches to texts like Beowulf. Students read descriptions of Grendel and drew pictures of what they thought the monster would look like.
