Professor Betty Schellenberg wins mentorship award

March 14, 2023

The 間眅埶AV Department of English is pleased to announce that Professor Betty Schellenberg has been awarded the Excellence in Mentorship Award.

Kandice Sharren and David Weston, two of Schellenbergs former students who wrote on her behalf, had this to say about her award:

"We are thrilled to announce that Professor Betty Schellenberg is the recipient of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies 2023 Excellence in Mentorship Award! This competitive award honours faculty who have taught, led, and motivated their students in the study of the long eighteenth century."

The awards' committee was impressed by the quality of testimonials, which included former students and current colleagues and friends. The committee praised Schellenberg for her incredible level of mentorship and support (for undergraduate and graduate students alike), including supervision that goes beyond (including sourcing monetary support for students or assisting those transitioning outside of the academy). They also noted how her engagement with early and emergent scholars, passion for the period (and desire to make it accessible to others), and dedication to fostering community in and outside of the academy is truly wonderful." Letters by former students, Dr. Sarah Creel and Angela Wachowich, also highlighted Schellenbergs unfailing dedication to her students, and her consistent generosity of spirit and knowledge.

Congratulations, Professor Schellenberg! As Drs. Kandice Sharren and David Weston wrote in their nomination letter, she has directly shaped the careers and lives of scholars from around the world and we can think of no person more worthy of this award.
