New Students
Documentation
All students must ensure they have the necessary documents to be legally entitled to work on a co-op term:
- Social Insurance Number: For information about how to obtain a SIN, review the "Applying for a SIN handout" by International Services for Students.
- MSP registration: For information about the medical insurance that students need, including while on a co-op term, review the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Medical Insurance page.
International students: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires that students who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents apply for a Co-op work permit in order to be eligible to work off campus in a full-time position. This is different than a Study Permit. For instructions on how to apply and what the processing times are, review the "Apply for a Co-op/Internship Work Permit" handout by International Services for Students.
The Co-op office must have a copy of your valid co-op work permit prior to students being released to apply for Co-op positions.
Orientation
Students gain comprehensive knowledge about the Co-op program through a self-paced Co-op Orientation Canvas course. This course covers essential aspects such as the Co-op program process, available opportunities, success strategies, and details about your participation in the program.
Workshops
All workshops are offered each semester and should be completed as follows:
- Resume and Cover Letter Workshop – Completed in the semester prior to your first seeking term (2 hours per workshop, done in classroom)
- Interview Workshops – Completed at the beginning of your first seeking semester
All students must attend each of these workshops during the assigned semester as part of the approval process to seek their first co-op job. Information about the date/location of these workshops is sent to all students on the SOSY Co-op Maillist at the beginning of each semester (instructions to join the maillist are in your welcome to co-op email, received after you apply to co-op).
Assignments
Students will complete additional assignments prior to accessing a co-op job posting to continue to improve their job search documentation and strategy. This process is also used for students to identify in which semester they wish to apply for jobs.
One-to-one Coaching
Students may connect with us for additional feedback on their Resume and Cover Letter or for a Mock Interview.
