Climate Communication: From Principles to Practice
Technological advances, laws and regulations are necessary for tackling climate change, but these won鈥檛 work without active engagement and acceptance by citizens. This course introduces the foundations of climate change communication and explores practices that break through persistent barriers to effectively talk about climate action with different audiences to motivate behaviour change. You will learn about narratives and storytelling, countering misinformation, and how to engage in climate conversations. By the end of this course, you will have the practical communication skills you need to motivate resistant stakeholders and engage in climate action in your organization and communities.

What you will learn
After completing this course, you鈥檒l be able to do the following:
- Explain the principles of effective climate communication and inclusive engagement
- Analyze common barriers to climate engagement and consider how they apply in your context
- Develop narratives and stories to motivate diverse audiences
- Identify and apply effective communication strategies and consider the best approaches for your audiences and initiatives
- Examine and critique the role of climate messengers, messages and misinformation
- Combine these learnings to engage in authentic climate conversations with diverse audiences
How you will learn and be evaluated
- Prepare to spend about 8 hours per week on coursework
- Expect reading, videos, online discussions and skill-building activities
- Optional: Meet online with the class and instructor or guest speaker as scheduled by the instructor (recording available)
