¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Alumni Council Profile | Nathan Thorpe

January 20, 2025

Nathan Thorpe (BA ’00) graduated from ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV with a major in history and humanities, focusing on European history form 1850-1950. Since graduating, he has spent over two decades in the banking industry, and is currently a Business Advisor with Scotiabank. In his role as an Alumni Council member, Nathan is passionate about strengthening ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s alumni network and supporting financial literacy in the community.

What is a highlight of your career so far?

What has been most rewarding for me is leading teams of business specialists across different settings—branch, call center, and regional teams. Helping to advise clients through coaching and supporting my teams is a double win for me. Financial literacy is often overlooked, and educating people in this area means a great deal to me.

Why did you now choose to get involved with ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV in this way?

In 2021, after a hiatus from volunteering, I felt it was time to reconnect with ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. My experience at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV was so positive, and I saw this as an ideal way to give back and help build a strong alumni community.

In your opinion, what are the benefits of staying connected to your alma mater, especially at this stage of your career and life?

We all share a connection to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, regardless of when we graduated or in what discipline.  ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV becomes a network that we should be able to leverage for learning, support and even nostalgia.  There are more opportunities than ever to stay connected and this is truly and exciting time to be part of the alumni community.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to pass along to current students who are close to graduation or recently graduated?

I believe the skills and knowledge you gain at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV are the foundation for your future. You’ve completed something substantial—take the opportunities that come your way and pursue your goals with confidence!
