Everyone can make a difference to support students

May 24, 2023

間眅埶AV is in the midst of many firstsfrom building the first medical school in Western Canada in the last 55 years, to establishing a new gondola on Burnaby Mountain (the first for a Canadian city!).

It goes without saying that much of our work would not be possible without the generosity of our donors, friends, alumni and community partners. Thats why this year, we hosted our inaugural Leaders Lifting Leaders eventyet another first of what will be an annual celebrationto connect students and the remarkable donors who support them through vital scholarships, awards and bursaries.

On May 18, I had the pleasure of meeting some of these wonderful donors and students who make 間眅埶AV an incredible place. I was especially inspired to hear from a fourth-year undergraduate student about what this critical support has meant to him and his fellow students during a time of unprecedented inflation and rising food costs. Another student with disabilities noted how financial support enabled her to structure courses at her own pace.

These small but special moments remind me of why Im so passionate about the work we do in university advancement. Feeling the positive energy in the room, and knowing the genuine connections we were able to facilitate between current and future leaders that day, has really motivated us to continue looking for new and meaningful ways to celebrate our donors who share that passion.

As President Joy Johnson said in her opening remarks, these awards go beyond financial assistancethey also serve as a source of inspiration, transform lives, and create opportunities for students to pursue their dreams and reach greater heights.

Everyone can make a difference to support students, and Im so proud of all weve been able to accomplish together as a compassionate and caring community. Here are a few things you may not have known about giving at 間眅埶AVand how a little can go a long way in changing lives:

  • Between January and May 2023, more than 400 graduate students in need received $56,000 ($140 each) in emergency grocery cards. Thanks to donor support, this program ensured that students could offset rising food prices and purchase essentials.
  • In fall 2022, 482 donors came together to raise $100,888 toward scholarships and bursaries, food security, health and counselling services, and more.
  • At the end of 2022, we asked our donors for help in supporting future alumniand they answered the call. Over $650,000 went toward student scholarships, bursaries, awards and support programs. From giving 10 dollars a month or making a one-time $50 donation to committing a larger gift, your generosity has made all the difference.
