Join other Black students to connect, discuss, and share. Session topics are broad and can range from identifying personal goals and achievements to reflecting on collective experiences.

About

The goal of the group is to offer support and create community with other Black students at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. Sessions are hybrid and take place both on Zoom and in person at the SOCA Black Student Support Centre.

Upcoming Sessions

  • September 13 - How to Navigate Transitions
    Navigating transitions can be challenging if you don't have the tools and skills. Many Black identifying students are international students who navigate culture shock when coming to Canada. They also need to adjust from high school to university in a new country which brings its own challenges. Black students also need to adjust to a space that may be isolating because they have less people that look like them that they can relate to. This workshop will give space for students to share their stories and get tips regarding how to transition well.
  • October 25 - Candle Making - A self-care practice
    This workshop is about have fun in a safe space. The art of candle-making will be shared, along with how this practice can help students take care of themselves. Material will be provided - please bring an apron to protect your clothing.
  • November 8 - Yoga Stretches - A self-care practice
    This workshop is about having fun in a safe space while learning how to reduce anxiety and increase movement. The art of yoga will be shared, with simple stretches one can do in the morning or at night to relax the body and take care of self. Please bring a yoga mat to participate in the workshop.
  • December 6 - Building Healthy Relationships - Learning to love myself
    Relationship issues are prevalent among university and collage aged students. Students are actively learning to make friends, improve relationship with family and enter into romantic partnerships. A key thing that is sometimes missing is self-love. It is difficult to receive love if you don't practice it because it will be difficult to recognize. This workshop will share tools and tips about self-love and how it can benefit other relationships.
  • End of Semester Celebration (Date and Time - TBA) - Learning Distress Tolerance Skills

Tricia-Kay Williams is also available to Black ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV students and recent alumni for ongoing, one-to-one counselling (for a maximum of 10 sessions / per issue).

About the Facilitator

Tricia-Kay Williams

Tricia-Kay Williams has a BA degree in Psychology from the York University in Toronto O.N. and an MA degree in Counselling Psychology at the Adler University in Vancouver B.C. Tricia has extensive experience counselling individuals and families and is skilled in treating: Trauma, Anxiety, Transitional/Career and Relational issues. She is also an active community and social services professional who worked for some years as a Residential Youth Worker. Tricia is an advocate for anti-racism that affects BIPOC individuals and consults with organizations to foster a more anti-racist approach. Tricia is the owner of a counselling practice called  and is the host of a YouTube channel called .
