FASS 110 - STT - Exploration in the Arts and Social Sciences (4)

Using Indigenous and non-Indigenous texts, FASS 110 focuses on contemporary Indigenous topics and concerns in a variety of fields including English literature, sociology, biology, gender and sexuality, and art history. Students will work on writing assignments in class and independently, will attend field trips and will be assigned group projects. Students with credit for FASS 110W may not take this course for further credit.

FASS 118 - STT-Inequality and Poverty: Evolution, Ethics and Redistribution (3)

Considers the conceptualization, measurement and evolution of inequality and poverty, with special reference to the comparative setting of the USA and Canada. Topics will include: Conceptualizing Distribution, Inequality and Poverty; The Evolution of Inequality in the USA and Canada; Poverty and Homelessness; Global Poverty and Inequality; Wealth and Earnings; Ethics; Politics and Redistribution. Breadth-Social Sciences.

FASS 120 - STT - Learning Strategies for Academic Success (2)

Course allows students to develop study skills and learning strategies that will assistant them with their transition to a post-secondary environment; it will facilitate the establishment of connections with self, the cohort, instructors, the university and with individual future educational and career aspirations. Students will receive support to navigate and access available resources.

FASS 200 - STT-Writing Right: Strategies for Effective Revision (1)

Provides an opportunity for students to undertake a close revision of a previously written paper in order to learn how to improve the clarity, economy, and flow of their writing. Activities are designed to teach students how to revise their work more effectively. The writing and revision strategies worked on in this course are applicable across all disciplines. Prerequisite: 30 units.

FASS 201 - FASS Co-op Practicum I (3)

First term of work experience in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Co-operative Education Program. Units for this course do not count towards the units required for an 間眅埶AV degree. Graded as pass/fail (P/F). Prerequisite: Open only to students accepted to the FASS Co-op Program.

FASS 202 - STT-Social Media for Work and Play (1)

Provides opportunities to explore how social media works for personal use, career progress, at work, and to gain skills to use it more effectively. Many jobs need a working knowledge of social media even if not clearly positioned within the fields of communications or marketing. Learning will be through classroom presentations, online discussion, and practical assignments (group & individual). Prerequisite: 30 units.

FASS 203 - STT-The Art of Debate: Constructive Adversarialism in Theory and Practice (1)

Introduces analyzing and participating in formal debates. Through lectures, discussions, practice debates and analysis assignments, students will be introduced to the foundational argumentation skills of persuasive debating. Prerequisite: 30 units.

FASS 204 - STT-Communicating in Conflict and Negotiation: An Introduction to the Essential Skills (1)

Introduces an overview of essential skills and strategies for dealing effectively with conflict and negotiating in a range of contexts, including business, work, home, and community. Students will be introduced to foundational readings on the methods and theories of effective, collaborative negotiation and conflict resolution. Prerequisite: 30 units.

FASS 205 - STT-Finding Voice: Public Speaking for Social Change (1)

Provides an opportunity for a skills-based immersion into the art of Public Speaking. In a workshop setting, learners will critically analyze contemporary speeches while developing their own skills in speech, rhetoric, non-verbal communication, and storytelling. This course is for students, in any discipline, who wish to learn to be effective public speakers in academia and beyond. Prerequisite: 30 units.

FASS 206 - STT-Creating Effective Teams (1)

Explores how teams require a self-awareness, awareness of others and the ability to communicate expectations and norms. This course will use a selection of articles, tools and current events to develop an awareness of individual strengths, weaknesses and the impact on the team environment. Classes will be discussion and activity based. Mandatory Core Strengths assessment $70.00. Prerequisite: 30 units.

FASS 207 - STT-Cultural Humility: Understanding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (1)

Explores the broad topic of cultural humility in order to gain a greater understanding of how cultural beliefs and values impact behaviour. Students will learn to distinguish key terms in the area of diversity, inclusion and equity. Students will explore ways to improve inclusion within FASS and broadly at 間眅埶AV. Prerequisite: 30 units.

FASS 208 - STT-Introduction to Personal Financial Planning for Students (1)

Introduces students how to optimize their financial resources. Some of the topics which will be covered are debt avoidance and management, saving vs investing, creating and maintaining a budget, tax planning strategies, passive income and side hustles, and the importance to networking. The goal is to help students learn and develop the habits needed to reach their financial goals. Prerequisite: 30 units.

FASS 209 - STT-Write-minded: Writing with a Public Audience in Mind (1)

Provides an opportunity to write persuasively for a non-academic audience. In the first part of each class, students analyze and practice elements of persuasive writing. In the second part, students workshop their drafts of a short opinion piece in roundtable editing sessions. Each student will produce a polished piece of writing that they could submit for publication. Prerequisite: 30 units.

FASS 301 - FASS Co-op Practicum II (3)

Second term of work experience in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Co-operative Education Program. Units for this course do not count towards the units required for an 間眅埶AV degree. Graded as pass/fail (P/F). Prerequisite: Open only to students accepted to the FASS Co-op Program.

Fifth term of work experience in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Co-operative Education Program. Units for this course do not count towards the units required for an 間眅埶AV degree. Graded as pass/fail (P/F). May be repeated for additive credit. Prerequisite: Open only to students accepted to the FASS Co-op Program.
