Business Honours

Bachelor of Business Administration

Students will complete mainly non-business courses during the first 60 units of the program, completing three categories of courses. The first category consists of lower division requirements that are mainly foundation courses, which prepare students for more advanced upper division business courses. The second category consists of courses completed to meet university requirements in writing, quantitative and breadth. The first two categories should be completed during the first 60 units.

In the third category, students choose courses that are based on intellectual interest or to achieve academic goals. The last 72 units of the degree program consists of the completion of the core upper division business courses, at least one area of concentration, lower and upper division electives, and an additional 12 units of 400 division BUS or BUEC courses.

Students are also required to complete the Business Career Passport which consists of six workshops that will prepare students to manage their career through their academic program and after graduation. The goal of the Business Career Passport is to help students make informed decisions about career paths, gain access to career opportunities and present themselves professionally to employers.

Ά‘ΟγΤ°AV Requirements

Students may apply for entry to the honours program after completion of all required lower division courses with a C- minimum, 15 upper division business units, and satisfaction of all minimum Grade Requirements for the program.

Grade Requirements

For entry and continuance, the following grade point averages will be used:

  • minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average
  • minimum 3.00 cumulative upper division grade point average 
  • minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average on all BUS and BUEC courses
  • minimum 3.00 grade point average for upper division BUS and BUEC courses

For graduation, students must also meet the required minimum GPAs in accordance with the University and the Beedie School of Business.

Course Access

In addition to normal university grade point average requirements, the Beedie School of Business requires a minimum 2.30 overall Ά‘ΟγΤ°AV Business course grade point average for entry into all 300 and 400 division business courses.

For a course to be accepted as fulfilling a prerequisite, or for a lower division requirement, or for a core course to be accepted in a student’s program in business, a student must have obtained a minimum grade of C- (C minus).

Course Limit

Students with fewer than 60 units may enrol in a maximum of 16 units per term. Those with 60 or more may enrol in a maximum of 18 units.

Letters of Permission

The Beedie School of Business Administration does not normally approve letters of permission for students already enrolled at Ά‘ΟγΤ°AV.

Program Requirements

Students complete at least 132 units, of which 60 units must be upper division. Additionally, the 132 units:

  • must include a minimum of 36 units, outside the Beedie School of Business*. Within the 36 units, students must meet the University requirements for breadth —  6 units labelled as Breadth-Humanities, 6 units labelled as Breadth-Science, and 6 units labelled as Breadth-Social Science, and 6 units of additional breadth that may or may not be labelled.

*Courses not labelled as BUS or BUEC that are completed as part of the lower division requirements may be used toward the 36 units outside business. 

  • Students admitted to the Beedie School of Business for the Fall 2014 term onwards must complete the Business Foundation Program in their first term. Students admitted through Category 1 must complete the Business Foundation Program – High School Stream. Students admitted through Category 2, 3, or 4 must complete the Business Foundation Program - Transfer Stream. The courses required for each stream can be found under the Business Foundation Program.

BUS 201 - Introduction to Business (3)

The management and operation of business, including the principles, concepts, ideas and tools used by managers. Management in the contemporary world of high technology is emphasized, featuring examples and cases involving high-tech firms. In addition, the course exposes students to international and local business issues, and to large companies as well as to smaller, entrepreneurial firms. Prerequisite: This course is only open to approved Business Administration majors admitted to the faculty through the Business Foundation Program - High School Stream. Students with credit for BUS 130 or 202 or 301 may not receive further credit for this course, nor students with more than 30 units.

BUS 202 - Foundations for Collaborative Work Environments (3)

The demand for innovation in the context of a globalized workforce has raised the importance of developing collaborative skills and managing workplace diversity. Foundations for Collaborative Work Environments expands students' skills in effectively collaborating with others while participating in the Beedie Product Management Experience to achieve team and business objectives. Prerequisite: This course is only open to approved Business Administration majors, joint majors, or second degree students admitted to the faculty through the Business Foundation Program - Transfer Stream. Students with credit for BUS 130 or 201 or 301 may not receive further credit for this course.

Introduces students to the knowledge and skills necessary to make full use of business information systems. Upper Division Requirements

All upper division BUS courses have a prerequisite of 60 units. However, approved business majors may complete 300 division BUS courses upon completion of 45 units.

In the last 72 units, honours students must complete a minimum of 60 upper division units, of which a minimum of 48 units must be in business or BUEC courses.

The minimum 48 upper division units in business must include the following

  • all core courses
  • an area of concentration
  • at least three 400 division BUS or BUEC courses (excluding practicum courses and BUS 478). Any 400 division BUS or BUEC course completed at Ά‘ΟγΤ°AV must be worth a minimum of 3 units to be used to fulfil this requirement. These courses may be used toward the requirements for an area of concentration. At least one of these 400 division BUS or BUEC courses must be completed at Ά‘ΟγΤ°AV.
  • additional 12 units of 400 division BUS or BUEC coursework

Further upper division courses in any discipline must be completed to bring the total upper division units to a minimum of 60.

Upper Division Access

All upper division BUS courses have a prerequisite of 60 units. However, approved business majors, joint majors, honours, joint honours, double degrees, and minors may complete 300 division BUS courses upon completion of 45 units.

However, if any students enrol in 400 level business courses before completing the first 60 lower division units, these courses will not count as fulfilling the 45 upper division units required in the final 60 units of the program, nor as part of the upper division units for the business majors, joint majors, honours, joint honours, double degrees, and minors.

The honours program requires 12 units of 400 division courses in BUS or BUEC, or in other faculties approved in advance by the undergraduate program's executive director, or predetermined by the department above and beyond the 120 unit requirement for the major. The 12 units are in addition to the requirements for the major.

Examines various topics related to a firm's entry into international markets and the means of sustaining a formidable presence vis-a-vis competitors in foreign markets. Begins with an overview of the historical evolution of the globalization process, the internationalization process of individual firms, challenges that internationalizing firms face in terms of differences in culture and political risk among various host markets entered, and models of multinational companies, and then builds on this background in providing an overview and in-depth coverage of important entry modes such as licensing/franchising, JVs/alliances, acquisitions/mergers with specific focus on managing these modes of entry in an international setting. Innovation and Entrepreneurship

BUS 314 - Resourcing New Ventures (3)

Start-up and early-stage ventures have particular financial challenges associated with the uncertain and unproven nature of the project. This course analyzes how entrepreneurs and their financial backers can spot, create and manage value. Topics covered include opportunity recognition, cash flow forecasting, valuation methodologies, financial contracts, and careful negotiations. Various sources are considered for start-up capital (private debt, angel financiers, venture capitalists, development banks), and different strategies are considered for harvesting or exiting (initial public offerings, merger, acquisition, leveraged buy-out, shut down) a venture. Prerequisite: BUS 238 or BUS 254; 60 units.

BUS 338 - Foundations of Innovation (3)

An introduction to the theory and practice of the management of technological innovation. The external environment for technological innovation is examined through investigation of national and regional systems of innovation. The internal firm capabilities for creating and sustaining innovative firms are explored in detail, from the creation of ideas through to the commercialization of new products and services. Negotiation is the art and science of securing agreements between two or more parties that are interdependent and who are seeking to maximize their outcomes. The purpose of this course is to understand the theory and processes of negotiation as it is practiced in a variety of settings. The course will allow participants the opportunity to develop these skills experientially and to understand negotiation in useful analytical frameworks. BUS 441 - Web Analytics (3)

Adopting an experimental approach and being responsive to customer and competitor reactions is an essential skill set to firms and organizations. Situated in the data-rich environment of digital media and channels like websites or search engines, this course is designed to help students develop "probe and learn" skills, which translate beyond web and digital management, and help them acquire hands-on experience in using analytics tools to manage digital marketing campaigns. Prerequisite: BUS 360W, BUS 343; 60 units.

BUS 443 - New Product Development and Design (3)

Understand how to develop and launch new products that will be successful with customers. Students will learn to: identify product/service opportunities; generate and evaluate concepts; develop concepts into products; launch new products. Prerequisite: BUS 360W (or another upper division Writing (W) course), 343; 60 units.

BUS 444 - Business to Business Marketing (3)

This course deals with the marketing of products and services to industrial and other non-consumer sector buyers. The student will be expected to apply previously acquired marketing skills to purchasing situations which arise between organizations. Due to the nature of manufacturing activity in this province, industrial marketing will be approached from a resource industry based standpoint where discussions permit. Prerequisite: BUS 343, 360W; 60 units. Students with credit for BUS 344 may not complete BUS 444 for further credit.

BUS 445 - Customer Analytics (3)

Exposes students to the art of using analytic tools from across the spectrum of data mining and modeling to provide powerful competitive advantage in business. Students will learn to recognize when a method should or should not be used, what data is required, and how to use the software tools. Areas covered include database marketing, geospatial marketing and fundamental strategic and tactical decisions such as segmentation, targeting and allocating resources to the marketing mix. Designed for students seeking a position in product management, topics include defining the role of the product manager; understanding your product as a business; organizational structures, informal networks and how the influential product manager taps into them; product lifecycles (PLC); building visibility and cross-functional teams; competitor analysis; pricing methods and the 4Ps. BUS 371 - Critical Thinking in Business Practice (3)

Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action. This course builds on the critical thinking process introduced in BUS 217W and explores its use in solving business problems. Prerequisite: 60 units; BUS 217W.

BUS 470 - Business Applications of Game Theory (3)

Game theory is the systematic study of the strategic interactions between economic entities. This course introduces students to the basic concepts of game theory in strategic decision making in a business setting. Games with increasing complexity will be analyzed, with the emphasis on developing a student's ability to think analytically and recognize strategic interactions in strategic management scenarios. Prerequisite: 60 units; BUS 207, BUS 360W.

BUS 471 - Strategic Decision Making (3)

In today’s highly dynamic, complex and information-rich business environment, strategic decision-making skills are crucial. Students will learn about the biases and heuristics that are most relevant for strategic decision-making. Students will receive training to raise awareness for and overcome common biases and generate efficiencies in decision-making through leveraging value from heuristics. Students will also experience and learn about strategic decision-making in teams to become inclusive leaders and successful strategists. Prerequisite: 60 units; BUS 360W.

BUS 479 - Strategy Analysis Practicum (3)

A project study that enables students to work on contemporary business problems, requiring them to apply their foundation knowledge in business and advanced analytical skills. Business Career Passport Requirements

Students who are admitted to the Beedie School of Business beginning in the Fall 2012 term will complete the Business Career Passport.

Students who are admitted to the Beedie School of Business beginning in the Fall 2017 term will complete the Business Career Passport as part of the Business Foundation Program within 12 months of the start of their program.

During the BBA program, students register in and complete six mandatory Business Career Passport workshops. The workshops may be completed in any order.
