Chemistry and Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Joint Honours

Bachelor of Science

This Bachelor of Science (BSc) honours program is offered jointly by the Department of Chemistry and Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.

間眅埶AV Requirements

Entry requires permission of both Departments.

Program Requirements

Lower Division Requirements

Students complete the same lower division requirements as those specified for the major program.

Upper Division Requirements

Students complete the same upper division requirements as those specified for the major program and

CHEM 481 - Undergraduate Research (5)

Experimental and/or theoretical research; preparation of a written report and oral presentation in research seminar format. 間眅埶AV requires selection of a faculty supervisor and submission of a research proposal. Prospective students must contact the chemistry advisor to register their interest in this course before the last day of classes of the previous term. The research proposal is due by the end of the examination period preceding the research term. Prerequisite: Permission of the department; knowledge of chemistry at an advanced level. Normally taken after completion of 300 level course requirements.

MBB 491 - Independent Study Semester (5)

Part time laboratory research in an area of molecular biology or biochemistry for preparation of a thesis in molecular biology and biochemistry. Before seeking approval for enrollment in this course, the student should already have obtained the agreement of a 間眅埶AV faculty member that he/she is willing to supervise the project, and have prepared a written proposal (of approximately 1-2 pages) stating the nature of the research project. The course will include the preparation of a written research report on the results of the project, and may also, at the discretion of the supervisor, include an oral presentation of the results. Prerequisite: MBB 231, with a minimum grade of C, and permission of the molecular biology and biochemistry department. Usually, upper level standing with at least 60 units in a molecular biology and biochemistry major, minor or honors program will be required.

and

At least 3 additional units of upper-division CHEM and 3 additional units of upper-division MBB.

Electives

In addition to the above, students complete

  • courses chosen to fulfil the WQB requirements

  • upper division courses from any faculty to total at least 60 upper division units

  • electives at any division from any faculty to provide 132 units as required for the degree

Co-operative Education Recommendation

Students are encouraged to enrol in co-operative education.

University Honours Degree Requirements

Students must also satisfy University degree requirements for degree completion.

Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements

Students admitted to 間眅埶AV beginning in the fall 2006 term must meet writing, quantitative and breadth requirements as part of any degree program they may undertake. See Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements for university-wide information.

WQB Graduation Requirements

A grade of C- or better is required to earn W, Q or B credit

Must include at least one upper division course, taken at 間眅埶AV within the student’s major subject
Q - Quantitative

6

Q courses may be lower or upper division
B - Breadth

Additional Breadth 6 units outside the student’s major subject (may or may not be B-designated courses, and will likely help fulfil individual degree program requirements)

Students choosing to complete a joint major, joint honours, double major, two extended minors, an extended minor and a minor, or two minors may satisfy the breadth requirements (designated or not designated) with courses completed in either one or both program areas.

Residency Requirements and Transfer Credit

The University's residency requirement stipulates that, in most cases, total transfer and course challenge credit may not exceed 60 units, and may not include more than 15 units as upper division work.

  • At least half of the program's total units must be earned through 間眅埶AV study
  • At least two thirds of the program's total upper division units must be earned through 間眅埶AV study
  • At least two thirds of the upper division units in the courses of a school offering (or joint offer) must be earned through that school at 間眅埶AV
  • For information regarding transfer, consult an Advisor.

Elective Courses

In addition to the courses listed above, students should consult an academic advisor to plan the remaining required elective courses.
