An examination of the history of modern France from 1789 to the present with a focus on the social, political, and cultural divisions within the French nation resulting from the Revolutionary era, industrialization, the expansion and eventual decolonization of France's colonial empire, and the World Wars and their consequences. An advanced examination of the complex history and patterns of the Religious Reformation in sixteenth century Europe. From the world of late-medieval piety to the outbreak of the English Civil War, this research seminar examines the changing nature of religious belief in early modern England with a particular focus on the origins, development and impact of Protestantism.
