Explores the various empires (Indigenous, Spanish, French, Dutch, British) that sought dominance in North America after 1500, and discusses the usefulness of 'empire' as a way of thinking about history and power. Prerequisite: 45 units including nine units of lower division history. Recommended: at least one of HIST 208, 209, 212, 213, and 223.
