EXPL 135 - Thinking Through Images (3)
Interdisciplinary introduction to the study of images in contemporary society and history. Combines social science and humanities perspectives on issues in visual culture. Prerequisite: Enrolment restricted to students accepted into the Explorations program.

An interdisciplinary study of a selected topic in the arts and/or social sciences. Prerequisite: Enrolment is restricted to students who are accepted into the Explorations program.

EXPL 150 - Introduction to Research Approaches in the Social Sciences (3)
An interdisciplinary examination of the nature and processes of social research, with a focus on research conducted in the local community. Enrolment restricted to students accepted into the Explorations program. Breadth-Social Sciences.
EXPL 160 - Introduction to Research and Interpretation in the Arts (3)
An interdisciplinary introduction to research and interpretation in Arts based scholarship. Enrolment restricted to students accepted into the Explorations Program. Breadth-Humanities.
EXPL 235 - Images in Society and History (3)
Introduction to the study of images in contemporary society and history, with an emphasis on the origin, function, and meaning of images in diverse social and historical contexts. Introduces perceptual, formal, contextual, historical, personal, and social approaches to the research, analysis and interpretation of images. Students who have completed EXPL 135 for credit cannot receive credit for EXPL 235. Breadth-Humanities/Social Sciences.
EXPL 310W - Selected Topic I (3)
Provides an in-depth, interdisciplinary investigation of a selected thematic, theoretical, historical, or contemporary topic, primarily from social science perspectives. Topics, research approaches, assignments, and projects will vary from term to term. Prerequisite: 30 units in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, including at least nine units in EXPL and a minimum of six units at the 200 division; or 45 units in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Drawing on the humanities and fine arts, this course will explore themes relating to cultural memory through written and performed interpretation. Prerequisite: 30 units in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, including at least nine units in EXPL and a minimum of six units at the 200 division; or 45 units in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences or the Faculty of Communication, Art, and Technology.
