REEL 81 COMMENTARY
1. Starts with lots of bird song and some traffic. The idea was to record the Holy Rosary bells, but they did not ring. Instead these chimes happened to ring from the Royal Trust building nearby. They are automated and very predictable.
0'50" car horn with echo, less bird song.
2'20" chimes.
2. A peal in progress. Repeated bell at end is a mistake (the ringer failed to stop it correctly).
3. Peal is in progress at start of this take. The ringers here and in previous take (8: one for each bell) are, by high campanological standards, rank amateurs, i.e., they do not ring in strict, flawless sequence with a steady meter. Compare the same bells rung by an English group of top-flight ringers (reels 97-99). However, in the semi-randomness of these patterns, there is a special quality that is missing in the rigorous, almost mechanical version of the English ringers.
5'30" end of peal. In this pause bird song and traffic at a distance, a pleasant urban portrait.
7'00" begin of second peal.
4. The gibbons have to be heard to be believed! Very human, vocal sounds. Hilarious! Opens with hooting gibbons at a distance.
1'00" bad wind on microphones. Recordists move over to puppet show.
*3'30" back to gibbons and closer up. Great reactions from onlookers, very funny!
5. Gibbons again, from a partly enclosed, the monkey house.
7. Gibbons again with whale show talk and whale sounds in the background. People reaching to gibbons, fountain in background. Interesting take.
