REEL 73 COMMENTARY
General Remarks: Generally there is very little activity reflected in these recordings. Few natural sounds. The recordists walked into and around the park following the main walking paths where most activity would be within earshot. This was a weekday, however, and certainly would be less active than a weekend. There is a small aircraft in almost every take of this reel. Takes 1-8: recordists start at the periphery of the park and move progressively closer to the centre.
1. 200' from Boundary Road, near outdoor swimming pool. Little foreground sound except for the occasional crow. Traffic whoosh in background.
2. 700' from road, pointing east on walking path. Few kids' voices and crows in distance, but mostly traffic in background.
3. 1000' from road near the pond. A distant baby carriage squeaks across the grass.
*1'15" good crows.
4. 1500' from road. Plane overhead at start, Crows, little other foreground sounds. Traffic further away.
5. 2000' from road. Lots of crows throughout, at various distances.
1'50" footsteps, approaching from behind: i.e., quickly appearing, more slowly disappearing.
3'30" distant plane.
3'35" distant crow -- plenty of reverb, more reverb than direct sound.
*6. A group of boys scuffle past the microphones and off the main path into the bushes, one calls to another. Plane in distance.
7. Small plane approaching slowly and disappearing slowly. Distant voices. Traffic like a wash in distance.
8. By east side of the park. Good ball sounds and shouting in traffic lulls. Individual traffic sounds here.
9. Baby carriage.
0'28" bicycle passing by on walking path.
0'50" distant train whistle.
*10. Small stream near golf course. Nice, with traffic ambience in far distance.
11. 0'55" passing footsteps.
1'15" boys' voices, distant (see next take) very reverberant.
*1'20" plane flying directly overhead, good (peak 1'55").
12. Boys playing near a pond, throwing rocks in, plane flying overhead at beginning of take.
