REEL 71 COMMENTARY
1. Distant waves, recorded from abandoned WW II gun tower at back of beach. Windy day, no individual waves perceivable, only broad wash of a bright quality.
2. Same surf, but recorded closer. A more menacing sound, stormier, with more pulsing wave breaks. Some problem with wind noise.
0'45" "Watch out" as water creeps up to microphones from large wave.
3. Recordists huffing and puffing up the bluff. Great suffering! Sometimes wind on microphones.
4. Distant surf recorded from parking lot, nice breathing quality to it (compare reel 50, A2 at 3'15"). Some low frequencies from traffic underlying.
0'50" car starting with heavy low frequencies.
1'35" plane overhead.
4'00" distant flute, then voices.
5. Noisy, broad wash of traffic from bridge in background with tinkling masts in close foreground. For all its spectral sprawl, the traffic roar does not mask, rather frames the delicate rigging tinkle of the moored boats. Wind problems.
6. Same as above (5) from less windy position. The tinkling not as clear in this take.
2'40" tire squeal.
7. A fluttering piece of plastic over a boat, moving slightly in the wind. Not that clear. Lots of traffic and still the tinkling in background.
8. A small pleasure boat being winched out of the water onto a trailer. Sounds like a roaring animal.
0'40" "excuse me for noising, but what are you doing?"
The distant clanking sound is from the bridge overhead, as traffic rolls over a metal divider. Bad wind on microphones.
