REEL 55 COMMENTARY

1. This is a low-key, but rich sequence. Patterns of train movement mix with rain, and the explosion of the 9 o'clock gun in a complex series of changes and events. Signal patterns of whistles and bells appear in continually changing spatial perspective. The recurring movement of the yard engine contrasts with its more fixed pattern of back and forth motion. The rain appears to lighten over the sequence.

1'15" diesel winds up, crosses road (bell sounding), long glissando to engine.

2'10" winds up again, followed by glissando. Rain in foreground. Sequence repeats several times throughout.

*3'35" 9 o'clock gun, with multiple echo.

*4'47" train whistle, more distant than the engine in foreground, repeated several more times, receding into distance.

7'45" distant train crossing bells.

8'00" nearer train crossing bells, train whistle still in distance.

8'10" nearest train crossing bells.

8'30" second train whistle, very distant at end.

2. opens with heavier diesel noise and train bell in distance.

0'50" train brakes and idles.
