REEL 24 COMMENTARY

1. The first seven minutes of this take are very inactive, only a general harbour roar. More active towards the last part, with the three seaplanes appearing at successively closer intervals. The second seaplane (perhaps with twin engines) fades-in in a particularly menacing way. These planes all have very powerful effect, their low frequency mass spreads extensively. The noon horn is very prominent here -- mellowed by distance from its harshness at closer points. The chimes are quite subdued. Ambient noise of harbour as heard from a wooded area around Brockton Point, heavy rumble.

*7'00" noon chimes (Royal Trust), to 8'10".

*7'20" noon horn (B.C. Hydro).

9'50" train whistle under seaplane.

11'40" distant train whistle.

*11'50" approaching seaplane -menacing sound.

13'00" another approaching seaplane.

2. Opens with water slurp, seagulls -- nice, industrial harbour roar and single tugboat.

0'14" boat horn.

3. This sequence is notable for the changes in perspective caused by the intruding seaplanes and the fisherman's reeling sounds both close foreground events in a heavy harbour background. Wave lapping in the foreground remains clear and distinct from the industrial rumble. The first five minutes of this take, with its onslaught of aircraft at the beginning appear on The Vancouver Soundscape, Record 1, Cut 4. Opens with seaplane overhead.
