REEL 118 COMMENTARY

1. Opens with fire siren flashing past, stops suddenly.

0'30" consternation of recordist.

1'25" more sirens, distant and approaching.

1'50" sudden cut-off of siren.

2. Powell and Seymour St., Eaton's demolition site. This jackhammer is not that noisy. It sounds as if microphones get swung into different directions throughout.

3/4. This small concrete foot bridge arches over a small stream leading to Lost Lagoon. The sounds were made at different points along a line between water and ceiling, equidistant from the curved wall. Microphones were on west side, the sound source on the east side. Incredible echoes were produced with a variety of percussive sounds, such as clip board snaps, 2 sticks, stick on edge of tin can, rocks, tongue clucking, etc. Recordist's laughter sounds eerie here!

5. Waiting for this old ship to blast its steam whistle before departure. A gruff old sound, clearly recorded. The ambience has a broadband, indistinct quality, some voices from time to time. The hissing is from the ship's funnel.

0'50" short toot as the ship is leaving berth and gangway is removed.

*4'40" unusual train whistle pattern (- - . . - -) with train bell, nice.

5'25" pattern repeated.

*8'30" three blasts of ship's whistle.

9'25" walking into the Oompapa Bavarian Restaurant.

6. Recordist's footsteps on gravel path, and other walking surfaces.

7. Past water sprinkler.

1'15" pause by running stream, then continue.

2'05" group of people (footsteps, voices) passes by. Recordist's footsteps continue. Good, on gravel.

2'25" pause, workman sweeping, humming pump in the background.

*8. Approaching pump noise, passing, walking on, passing water fountain at close range, sprinkler audible.

9. Tourist says "hello" to microphones.

1'15" extra pairs of footsteps phasing together. Seaplane in distance.

10. Recordist's footsteps on gravel.

0'55" water sprinkler, then recordist taking a drink from the fountain.

2'20" airplane overhead.

11. Entering the gardens from the parking lot.
