I did not reach the deepest section where, as some claim, you can hear people in America shouting, "Hurrah, Lafayette." Between you and me, the point I did reach seemed deep enough, - a constant rumbling and roaring, sinister groaning of machinery, water trickling down everywhere, thick exhalations, and the miner's lamp flickering ever more feebly in the lonesome night.
