COMMENTARY
1. Siren for interfactory signaling; (Factory has automatic earplug dispenser at front entrance!). [ID 1 0:00]
2. People talking; late in take recordist approaches machine that.although loud,contains interesting rhythms. [ID 2 0:40]
3. Short loud take. [ID 3 2:35]
4 & 5. Machine spills out empty spools (coming down chute) in rhythmic sequences. [ID 4 3:18] & [ID 5 3:47]
6. Note people shouting, trying to communicate above factory noise. [ID 6 4:16]
7. Switching spool storage tins with electric hoist.[ID 7 5:22]
8. Moving spools from container to container. [ID 8 6:34]
9. Weaving room (mark * 1 ) . Take moves from centre of room to another ambience. Because recordist is moving, rhythm of machines sounds like that of a moving vehicle. (somewhat like a train); interesting effect. [ID 9 7:10]
10. Siren inside weaving room. [ID 10 12:01]
11. Dumping of empty spools (short take). [ID 11 14:03]
12. Subtle (hardly audible) change in ambience, while recordist moves from one weaving room (with arched ceiling) to another one (with flat roof) (mark * #2). [ID 12 14:32]
13. Fabric moved upstairs. [ID 13 16:15]
14a. Outside factory. Ambience with rooster crowing, man hammering and hum of factory in background.[ID 14 16:44]
14b. Note presence of helicopter - as an intrusive sound from outside village.
15. Note rhythm of machine itself, and additional "melody" as axe is sharpened.
16. Saw used to be operated with footpedal, now electric. Note that Murray is working more carefully than shop owner, thus machine sounds quieter.
17. Table saw was operated almost as fast as now (electric power) through the use of gears (different size wheels changed rpm).
18. Shop owner talks about his shop, "time stands still here." Wants to continue it as it is, and hopes son will do the same. Talks about other things in the shop, (cabinet with squeaking door, carving tools etc.) then goes right on to stories about the war, and in no time becomes nostalgic about the good old times when Germany still had a king! End of take: leaving workshop, change to outdoor ambience.
