REEL 73 COMMENTARY
1. By a lake in Algonquin Park, extremely quiet ambience. Waiting for a big pileated Woodpecker to make some sound. No success.2. Obviously driving very slowly. The car motor is the predominant sound, some tire sound on bridge and the water as high frequency hiss above everything as car reaches middle of bridge. Not very interesting.
3. Nice gurgly river sound in foreground. Footsteps over bridge (30"), it's obviously a small bridge. More water sound til end. Mild wind on microphone throughout.
4. Same, not as good.
5. Same. When footsteps cross over bridge (0'40"), it sounds as if person passes between microphone and water, There is a short dip in amplitude of water sound. Not great.
6. Starts with beep, beep, beep. This was recorded east of Tenniscanning, Quebec, late afternoon. Warning: some coarse language by recordist (0'15"). Many American stations, most quite distant. Scanning from left to right on dial, sometimes long silent gaps between stations. Reception full of disturbance. One gets the sense of being far away from civilization. The only station that is clearest is a French speaking station (8'25").
7. Windshield wipers rhythmically above steady state low frequency hum from car motor.
8. Same, wipers going faster and are more squeaky.
9. Same, wipers in slow motion but really obnoxious now: scraping and squeaking in a regular rhythm. Quite funny.
10. Wipers even noisier (without the squeak though): scraping over ice on windshield.
11. Broadband stormy ambience, punctuated by passing vehicles (0'20", 1'40, 4'15", 5'05", 6'05", 6'25", 7'00", 8'30"). Their speed and the wet pavement create a very forceful crescendo that emerges out of wind and water ambience. Each car is a strong acoustic event. There were monstrous waves crashing about, but because of the wind, recordists had to turn microphones away from waves. So they are not clearly distinguishable from the wind. Recorded from car by road side.
12. Lake Superior Provincial Park. Recorded in changehouse shelter, 401 away from waves. Wind has died down, waves are smaller here, though still busy from the recent storm. Individual waves are almost indiscernable in this general upheaval.
Trucks pass in distance (7'50", 9'00").
