REEL 57 COMMENTARY
1. Recorded from hotel window. It is faint enough that it mingles with rest of ambience and sometimes creates aural illusions: one hears singing in traffic. Strong wind ambience, birds singing, general roar from city, occasional car passing.2. Same. Dog barking (0'30"), horse's hooves (0'40") passing. Singing not as clear as in first take. Somebody whistling (3'50") for short time, car horn (4'10").
3. Organ practicing, short fragments being played throughout, footsteps and shuffling of people in very clear acoustic space of church.
4. Rug cleaning only faintly audible as a swishing sound. Otherwise lots of footsteps, birds. Somebody whistling (1'00"), somebody saying "salut" (1'25"), traffic in distance.
5. Quiet ambience, reverberant. Kids playing and shouting in French, very lively. Footsteps of people passing.
6. Train whistle blowing just as take starts; gives take a nice acoustic perspective along with the strong foreground sound of kids shouting. Whistle again (1'10"-1'20"; 1'45"). Good take.
7. Lots of footsteps, disturbance in right microphone.
8. Many people ambience, a cash register going constantly. Dog barking (0'25").
9. Bus is idling for first 4 minutes, then leaving, loud muffler car (3'30"). It is relatively quiet when it has left. Only few cars passing. Bus returning (5'10"). Generally much quieter than other cities. This is the old part of town.
10. Both traffic samples were made in the evening. This one is noisier than above. But there are still periods of quiet. Goes in regular rhythm: lots of traffic passing, then silence for a few seconds, then again lots of traffic, silence, etc.
11. Entering the elevator, paying and recording as elevator arrives, people come out, recordists entering elevator.
12. From upper to lower: entering elevator and taking ride down. Ride takes about a minute. Very clattery ride. Sounds like an old wooden elevator. Stepping out, walking through gates.
13. Walking through gates, paying, entering elevator, waiting for it to start in complete silence (for at least 15" - note recordists' chuckles!). Going up, the elevator sounds much smoother. Somebody asks when they arrive upstairs "Did you get it?"
14. Note complete silence again as recordists enter elevator and wait for it to start going down.
