17. TRAFFIC AMBIENCE AND NOON HORN 5'10"

REEL 39 COMMENTARY

1. Topics of conversation are: old station engine, Johnny Murphy imitates its rhythm by clapping; water wheel.

2. Topics are: sound of air compressor at the mines, birds (1'30"), newborn baby crying (2'00"), horse and wagon, horse sleighs, sleighbells (3'15"), cattle bells (3'50"). Playing of cowbell (5'30"), nice mellow sound.

3. Topics are: airplanes, first appearance, first automobiles (1'00"). Names of birds (2'10").

4. Topics are: wild animals, crickets (2'10"), lumbering and wood cutting sounds (3'15"). Hilda and Johnny talk like they play music: they are completely tuned into each other.

5,6. Very unusual door chime, that J. M. made himself.

7,8. Note the hollow sound of the sawing and the strong wind in the background.

9. Very windy background, mother and child in distance, some birds, some cars passing. Wood cutting reverberates and echoes beautifully.

10. Kid calling at beginning, his voice echoing. Kids playing. Good take.

11,12. Very short takes.

13. Piano completely out of tune.

14. Talk about wind and rain on roof, snow on roof. Very animated talk. They talk parallel a lot, completely tuned into each other.

15. Talk about languages, and accents. J.M. telling anecdote about some people in the area, imitating their accent. Very funny, especially their own laughing afterwards.

16. Completely funky music. Great!

17. Traffic ambience with rain and wind. Good truck horn (3'45"). Noon horn (4'05") sounds more like boat horn. Very loud. Leaves rustling in foreground.
