REEL 27 COMMENTARY

1. Crickets singing in foreground and background. Bee or fly passing microphone at beginning of take.

2. Same as take 1, this time more cars passing. High frequency of crickets always audible, even when cars are passing.

3. Begins quietly, then three cars passing, wind in grass.

4. Bee flying around microphone, landing on it and taking off from it. Great! Airplane in distance, one car passing.

5. A fly on and around microphone at beginning. Very quiet until first car passes (1'30"); crow flying by (2'00").Cars passing (2'05"-3'55"; 4'20"; 5'40"; 6'40"-7'30"; 8'10"; 9'25"-10'10"; 11'20"-12'30").

6. The occasional car passing outside. Card game in foreground. Other voices and quiet hum in background.

7. Same as above, one guy keeps coughing.

8. Same as above, telephone ringing three times (1'03"). Rings distorted, followed by conversation on the phone until end of take, while game continues in the background.

9. Good take. Two types of sound: water splashing within cave in foreground, while water is blowing through blowhole in irregular rhythms further back, producing low frequency thunder-type sounds. Everything sounds very reverberant within hollow cave.

10. Foreground splashing, background "thunder" from water rushing through blowholes.

11. Same as take 10, except better microphone position. Rumbling sound from blowholes in distance reverberates in caves, which gives this take a strange spatial effect.
