REEL 16 COMMENTARY
1. Waves and foghorn constitute ambience of this take. Note again the long decay of blast. It is more distant here than on Reel 15. Note crescendo in horn (2'05"; 3'05"; 8'05"; 8'20") due to echo. Gives the sound an interesting envelope. Gun goes off (6'30") just between foghorn blasts, has an echo, but there is also print through on tape just before it goes off. D. Peters talks about this noon gun on Reel 14 Al.2. Waves and foghorn again. The presence of the boat is not very clear, except at beginning.
6. Atlantic's surf from 100 yds on sloping rock. Individual waves not distinguishable, more like a general boiling of waves, with the occasional larger crash.
7. Same surf, except closer up (10 feet from water). Sound of individual waves more audible in foreground, accompanied by steady roar in background. Good take. Note the long range changes in loudness as the sea recedes and becomes quieter for a while and then more aggressive and louder.
