REEL 12 COMMENTARY

1. Blacksmith has a very powerful voice, and a strong Slavic accent. He begins making a chisel (3'35" to 16'40"). Blacksmith describes working process throughout, i.e., gives the listener a perfect acoustic experience of his workshop (it is a soundwalk). Details of chisel making: starting fire (1'30"); hammering (7'25"); fire (9'30"-10'20"); hammering (10'25"); hot metal into water (11'40"); grinding (12'20"-15'25"); fire (15'45"); hot metal into water (16'15"); testing of tool (16'40"). Demonstration of other tools (blacksmith turns on machines and explains their use and usefulness). Postdrill (17'00"), has an interesting rhythm, a bit like a spinning wheel.

2. Propane torch, loud and hollow sound; air compressor (2'40") with a tock-tock motor; dider machine (4'10"); cutting torch (7'55"); air compressor (10'45"); welding apparatus (12'5O"); welding (15'00"); note sparkly sound and accompanying hum -- quite beautiful.

3. Recorded from inside blacksmith shop. Just before siren starts, cat meows quietly. Note long decay of siren. Some clattering and kitchen sounds at end.

4. Blacksmith describes the machine, but take ends before motor is actually turned on.

5. "Mary had a Little Lamb."

6. Continuation from take 4, useless.
