5 tips for winter driving
By Bonnie Kwan, communications officer, Safety & Risk Services
Winter conditions at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s three campuses can cause a stressful commute for those driving. At a higher elevation, Burnaby Mountain is the most likely of all of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s campuses to receive snowfall. The roads are constantly monitored for snow and ice by our Facilities team. Here are some tips to make sure your vehicle is ready for any essential travel to campus this winter season.
Change to winter rated tires
The first thing that touches the wintery roads are your tires. Change your tires to winter tires or all weather(M&S) tires. Make sure they have sufficient tread depth (minimum 3.5mm) if using tires from previous years. These tires will provide better traction on icy and snowy roads.
Service your vehicle
Head to your local auto repair shop to make sure your car is properly tuned and serviced and ready to take on wet, winter conditions. Your technician will be able to help you with what type of antifreeze is best for your vehicle. And check that your windshield wipers are in good working order - streaking wipers should be replaced.
Carry winter safety essentials
Always store an emergency kit in your car. This can include an ice scraper, snow brush, shovel, first aid kit, jumper cables, a flashlight and fresh batteries, warm gloves, a warm hat, boots, a good blanket and some extra winter clothing.
Use special care when driving
Drive with your headlights on, even during the day. Visibility can be an issue during high precipitation times, especially at higher elevations like Burnaby Mountain. When driving on ice or snow, allow plenty of room to stop and start. Always maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and others. Stay on well travelled roads where possible. Drive slow, especially on curves and corners.
Before you head out to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV in your vehicle in winter conditions, remember to check ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s Severe Weather resources for campus road conditions and for any route updates.
