Infrastructure Funding
There are many infrastructure funding opportunities listed in the (e.g., NSERC RTI). Some larger-scale, strategic infrastructure funding programs (e.g., CFI programs) are administered and supported at the institutional level. The Institutional Strategic Awards office administers these programs for ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV and supports ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV researchers to develop competitive proposals in line with ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s strategic research priorities. This page provides information about these programs, as well ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s internal processes related to these programs.

CFI Programs
The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) provides infrastructure funding to support individuals, larger labs, and national-scale platforms. While they are awarded to the institution to manage, researchers are the primary drivers of the proposals and are the principal users of the equipment. CFI occasionally holds special competitions (e.g., BRIF). These will be listed and advertised through the Funding Opportunities Database. The following are the primary recurring programs supported by ISA:
Focused on the individual researcher (or small teams of up to 3 researchers), JELFs help institutions to recruit outstanding research talent and acquire the tools that enable the innovative work of leading researchers. While the allocations and the application processes are managed by ISA, each Faculty is responsible for initiating and coordinating applications. If you are a prospective ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV researcher, please connect with your Faculty contact for more information.
The supports transformative infrastructure projects that underpin cutting-edge, globally competitive research.
This fund provides support for the ongoing operating and maintenance needs of research facilities of national importance. The next competition is expected in 2027.
The BCKDF is a cost sharing program that supports a variety of eligible infrastructure programs. At ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, BCKDF applications are due one month following submission of your CFI grant application. Development of BCKDF applications is supported by ISA on behalf of the researcher. If you have questions about this program, please contact cfi@sfu.ca.
Many CFI programs (i.e., IF and JELF) are eligible for financial support for operation and maintenance of the funded infrastructure. IOF is awarded to and managed by the institution and available once the infrastructure is operational. If you have questions about this program, please contact cfi@sfu.ca.
