Biography

Sarah Gutzmann is a social-ecological system scientist with a diverse technical background in coastal ecology, conservation biology, social science, and toxicology as well as public education and communication. Sarah holds a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science, a Master of Resource Management (MRM), and is a Biologist in Training with the BC College of Applied Biologists. She has completed graduate-level fellowships in community engaged research and policy knowledge mobilisation.

As per a priority of the Gwich鈥檌n Renewable Resources Board, her BSc research established that photography can be used as an application for community-based fisheries monitoring of broad whitefish in the Canadian Arctic. And, in partnership with the Kwakiutl Nation, Sarah鈥檚 MRM research developed a 鈥渄ecision space鈥� framework to promote resilient and reconciliatory kelp harvest and farming in a way that was guided by Indigenous governance principles as well as community values and objectives. Sarah鈥檚 expertise sits at the intersection of environmental sustainability, social equity, and economic development. In her PhD research, Sarah collaborates with communities, regulators, and industries to promote regenerative kelp harvesting, farming, and restoration.
