Gabrielle Parent
Communications Manager, ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Public Square

Meet Evan Chan – the new program assistant for ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Public Square! Evan is a 4th year Communications and Business student at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, with a passion for community building and design. Through his working experience at a radio station, Evan noticed that voices of diverse people can foster human rights and community harmony – which motivated him to join the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Public Square. He is excited to contribute to creating space for diverse perspectives and make social change.

Gabrielle: What interested you about working with ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Public Square?

Evan: I am interested in working with ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Public Square because of the power in creating space for diverse voices. As a queer person of color, I want to help advance the community building efforts and social justice initiatives at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. I also hope to meet people with different perspectives and backgrounds to learn more about diverse cultures.

Can you tell me a bit more about your studies at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV? What has been an impactful moment in your academic journey so far?

I started off as a business major student but discovered my interest in media and its linkage to social issues through communications courses. This impactful moment led to my decision to pursue a communications major with a business minor. After a marketing class, I also began considering that industry as my future career.

What is something you are passionate about?

I am passionate about different social topics, from food justice to climate change to human rights. I am also drawn to graphic design and I really enjoy my time working at CJSF, the radio station, which allowed me to combine my graphic design skills with my interest in communicating with the public.

We're excited to have you on the team and bring your skills to the office! What are you hoping to learn during your work-study?

I hope to learn more about how ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Public Square promotes events and improve my skills in facilitating communications within a team/organization. The responsibilities of program assistant align with my interest in marketing and will build transferable skills that I wish to bring with me in my future career.

Last question–when you’re not busy with school and work, how do you like to spend your time?

Outside of my work and study, I love to hang out with my friends and watch Drag Race. Recently, I started watching the UK version and I must say that the Brits are so humorous!

Please join us in welcoming Evan to the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Public Square team!
