Time Travellers’ Culture Jam: Imagining Art of the Future

In this special ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Public Square x  event, visitors from Vancouver’s future arts and culture scene will travel back through time to share their stories. Having lived through challenging contexts of climate change and an evolution of equity and inclusion, these creative time travellers reveal the need for an inspirational and collectively imagined vision for arts and culture in the future.

That’s where you come in! In collaboration with our time travelling storytellers, participants of the Time Travellers’ Culture Jam will create speculative time capsules from the future, with activities led by the . Together, we will discuss, debate and creatively imagine the future of arts and culture in Vancouver, uninhibited by what is and empowered by what could be.

Time Travelling Storytellers

Char Loro

Born in Manila, Philippines, and raised in Vancouver, Canada, Char Loro is a creative producer, curator and master of ceremonies for live music and street dance events, immersive art experiences, and video/photo production. She is very passionate about bringing people together to activate urban public spaces and creating accessible platforms for street dancers and music artists to share their artistry with the general public. Char founded Shape Shifter Studio - creative production company that collaborates with artists of various mediums; transforming spaces, curating and designing live performances and interactive events, as well as producing creative dance videos. Over the last 3 years, Char has been producing the '4 Elements of Hip Hop' event part of Vancouver Mural Festival, and has partnered with various organizations such as Vancouver Street Dance Festival, Public Disco, Vancouver Civic Theatres, City of Vancouver, the Museum of Anthropology UBC, and the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association. As a community builder, Char aims to create as many opportunities possible for womxn, people of diversity + spectrum, and artists of street dance, street art and urban music - to be seen, heard and given equal access to thrive and grow.

Savannah Erasmus

Savannah Erasmus is an amazing plus brilliant Indigenous comedian from the Kikino Metis Settlement in Northern Alberta.

She is a co-producer of the comedy + poetry show Millennial Line in Mount Pleasant. The show features diverse and queer forward lineups of local emerging artists. Her comedy has landed her on podcasts and APTN!

She is currently the volunteer coordinator for the Vancouver Mural Festival, where she combines her love of spreadsheets and community building.

One day, she hopes to combine her love of storytelling and art, into a long lasting career in media and journalism.

Tonye Aganaba

Tonye Aganaba is a multidisciplinary artist, musician, and arts facilitator residing on the unceded territories of the Squamish, Musqueam & Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. ​Their new album ‘Something Comfortable’ is an intentional and devotional endeavour inspired by their battle with Multiple Sclerosis. The album serves as the score to ​‘AfroScience’​ an immersive performance and workshop series fusing live music, dance, visual art/digital media and storytelling to stimulate conversation and action around identity, public health, and expression. ​Tonye’s shows, workshops, and dialogues are connected and intimate experiences, and evoke a kind of vulnerability that we all hunger for.

Facilitators / Vancouver Design Nerds

Jesi Carson

Jesi Carson is a design researcher and interaction designer specializing in community engagement and creative facilitation. As a Project Lead for the Vancouver Design Nerds Society, she has collaborated on various Design Nerd Jams and projects including the award winning , an urban intervention and experiment in reclaiming the Right to the City. Jesi is also the Lead Designer and Communities Coordinator for , an open source, open edit platform for sharing knowledge and stories about public participation and democratic innovations.

In the education department, Jesi holds a Diploma of Display Design from Langara College (honours, 2005), as well as a Bachelor's Degree in Interaction Design (2013) and Master's Degree in Design (2018) from Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

 

Sarah Hay

Sarah is an interdisciplinary designer, passionate about collaborating with and supporting folks working in architecture, urban planning, health, civic engagement, etc. She holds a Bachelors of Industrial Design from Carleton University and a Masters of Applied Arts in Design from Emily Carr University of Art + Design where her thesis explored the theory and practice of slow / sustainable design. She splits her working time as a freelance communication designer; an instructor at Emily Carr and ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV; and as co-director and project lead with the Vancouver Design Nerds. She lives on a boat with her family in a cooperatively owned marina in Vancouver.
