Today we launch an exciting new facility on our Burnaby campus: the  located in the W.A.C. Bennett Library.

Libraries continue to be a vital part of our social fabric, especially given the crucial role they play in nurturing strong and healthy democracies. But, like all institutions that mean to remain socially relevant, libraries must constantly adapt their methods.

Our new facility, which will also be known as 鈥淭he Makerspace,鈥� is designed for individuals who learn best by 鈥榙oing.鈥� It will allow students to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a plethora of tools and materials.

The Makerspace offers a 3D printer, laser cutter and digital technologies suited to podcasting and video recording. Its virtual reality studio can simulate fascinating teaching scenarios that support experiential and collaborative learning.

In addition, stress relief, community-building and student wellness activities, such as crocheting, embroidery and zine creation, are incorporated in many Makerspace activities.

Makerspaces have become increasingly common as means for promoting fast-changing modes of learning, and for fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills, both of which are essential to success in today鈥檚 knowledge-based global economy.

By exposing students and faculty to cutting-edge technologies that encourage hands-on learning, makerspaces not only facilitate innovation and entrepreneurship, but also support greater creativity in teaching practices.
