Students and many others at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV rely on public transit for safe and reliable access to our three campuses.

It’s deeply concerning, therefore, that Bus and SeaBus services have been reduced in recent weeks due to a labour dispute at Translink, and more troubling still that these services may cease altogether for a few days later this week.

In the face of this situation, we need to prepare ourselves for a high degree of disruption, especially for students on our Burnaby campus, who will soon be heading into final exams.

I want to assure the university community that ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s administration is working to minimize the impact of transit cutbacks on students by asking instructors and supervisors to be flexible about accommodating those who are most impacted.

If you face challenges getting to campus, please talk to your professors and supervisors to see what accommodations may be available. Possible options include allowing students or staff to work or participate remotely; modifying or postponing activities; and offering alternative means for classes or exams.

We’re in this together and it’s important that we support one another.

I urge those who drive to the Burnaby campus to arrange carpools with classmates and colleagues. Bus riders should seek alternative means of transportation in advance of the strike action slated for Wednesday. Additional free parking will be available on Burnaby campus.

At a time of year in which students are already under pressure to complete course requirements and to prepare for exams, it is important that we be mindful of the additional stress that this disruption places on them and on the entire university community.

While there are no easy solutions, I believe that, by working together, being flexible and showing understanding, we can do much to reduce the adverse impacts of this disturbing situation for the benefit of all.
