Get your vote on, ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV!

October 17, 2019

There’s a great meme going around at the moment: Voting. One hundred percent more effective than complaining on social media!

And apparently young voters agree.

Elections Canada recently reported that the turnout at 119 advance on-campus polling stations was up significantly from the last federal election. More than 111,000 votes were cast—many of them here at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV—as part of the Vote on Campus initiative that ran Oct. 5-9. That’s up more than 50 percent over 2015!

In an , I noted that ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV had the highest voter turnout of any Canadian university in 2015—a year that saw the youth vote rise to 57.1 percent from 38.8 percent in 2011.

Next Monday, October 21, is the last opportunity for Canadians to vote in this federal election, and I have a hunch that we’re going to see another record turnout of voters aged 18 to 24.

I certainly hope so. Because it is only by casting your ballot that you will ensure a healthy and robust democracy that responds to the interests of all citizens – including younger Canadians.

You needn’t just take my word for it. Check out this great article from our award-winning student newspaper, The Peak:  It has all kinds of tools and links to help you make an informed decision.

Then, make a plan to vote this Monday, Oct. 21. Advanced polls have closed on campus, so you’ll need to go to your assigned polling station—and if you’re not sure where that is, check Elections Canada’s .
