Neuroscience & Neurotechnology Seminar
Our next seminar is on February 27th at 2:30pm PST
Topic: Isolating human brain signals associated with paying attention
Speaker: Dr. John McDonald, Professor, Department of Psychology, Canada Research Chair (Cognitive Neuroscience), ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV
Abstract: William James wrote about complementary neuro-cognitive processes that enable observers to selectively perceive, respond to, and remember certain parts of the external world. Colloquially, individuals are said to pay attention to some things while ignoring other things. My students and I use scalp recordings of human electrical brain activity (the human electroencephalogram) to isolate brain signals associated with different attentional processes. Here, I will describe some event-related potential (ERP) methods that we have developed to isolate signals contributing to spatial orienting of attention, searching for task-relevant objects of interest (like Waldo), and the suppression of salient-but-potentially-distracting stimuli. I will also outline some avenues for more sophisticated signal-processing approaches and more health-oriented studies (e.g., on ADHD, shift work).
This seminar will be hosted online and in-person
In-person location: BPK Seminar Room SCK9624, ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Burnaby Campus
