MATH CATCHER: JOY OF DOING MATHEMATICS
Veselin Jungic, 間眅埶AV
Abstract: Come experience the Math Catcher Outreach Program that promotes mathematics by encouraging elementary students to recognize how math is used in everyday life and how it forms the basis for many of our daily and long-term decisions. The storytelling, pictures, models, and hands-on activities encourage young people to enjoy math and help dispel myths that math is boring and solely abstract.
This program has a strong Indigenous component that includes math and science workshops for Indigenous students. In this workshop, Math Catchers will talk about each of these activities and share some personal reflections about our experiences working with Indigenous learners.
In addition, the workshop participants will be engaged in building a mathematical object, solving puzzles, and playing with mathematical toys. An animated film from the Small Number series will be screened.
Grades: K-7 (Math & Science)
