Research Assistant Opportunity
The ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Institute for the Study of Teaching and Learning in the Disciplines invites applications for a Research Assistant for the Teaching and Learning Development Grant project, Identifying the Effects of Interactive Videos in Flipped-course Instruction, to begin March 25, 2022, or earlier.
This project will examine whether the quality and organization of instructional lecture videos in an asynchronous component of a first-year Japanese language course can help to create successful learning outcomes.
This project’s timeline is from Spring 2022 to Fall 2023. Ideally, we are looking for one research assistant, but additional research assistants may be hired depending on skillsets, experience, and availability.
Research assistant responsibilities include:
Phase 1: March – April 2022: (up to 20 hours)
• Undertaking literature reviews pertinent to the project; and
• Attending regular meetings with the project lead in a virtual meeting environment, (e.g., Zoom).
Phase 2: April 2022 - April 2023 (up to 80 hours)
• Assisting in survey and interview question design;
• Conducting recorded interviews with participants in both English and Mandarin and
• Attending regular meetings with the project lead in a virtual meeting environment, (e.g., Zoom).
Phase 3: May 2023 – August 2023 (up to 40 hrs)
• Transcribing and cleaning interview data;
• Assisting in data analysis and write up; and
• Attending regular meetings with the project lead in a virtual meeting environment, (e.g., Zoom).
Required qualifications, skills, and experience:
• Currently enrolled as a student at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV;
• Fluent in both English and Mandarin;
• Keyboarding/typing speed of a minimum of 70 wpm
• Experience conducting literature reviews;
• Experience in research instrument design such as creating surveys, interview protocols & questions;
• Experience coordinating, conducting, recording and transcribing interviews;
• Expertise with analyzing and summarizing data (including survey data);
• Strong interest in improving online learning in a higher education setting;
• Time to commit to the project (5 to 10 hours per week);
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong oral and written communication skills; and
• Experience in academic writing as demonstrated in assessments or previous projects.
Additional experience or skills that would be considered an asset:
• Conducted / participated in research project(s)
• Knowledge in quantitative and qualitative research
• Strong desire to learn more about educational research
• Knowledge of the use of video in an educational setting
• Language learning pedagogy and methodology
Rate of pay: $23-$25/hr (including vacation & statutory holiday pay, no medical or dental benefits) based on experience.
Duration and time commitment: March – April 2022: (up to 20 hours); April 2022 - April 2023 (up to 80 hours); May 2023 – August 2023 (up to 40 hrs)
