If you answered yes to the above questions, we invite you to apply to join our team as a research assistant, to begin in January 2020.

If you have some or all of the skills and experience we are seeking, we encourage you to apply. We are looking for 1 – 3 individuals who are passionate about research and want to apply their skills to teaching and learning inquiry and scholarship. Our goal is to build a team with a range of expertise.

As a member of the team your responsibilities include:

  • Participating in ISTLD activities, including the facilitation and administration of ISTLD-sponsored events (e.g., workshops and consultations);
  • Collaborating on ISTLD-based research and evaluation activities (e.g., analyze and summarize evaluation information related to ISTLD mandate, such as survey and interview data);
  • Quantitative data cleaning and analysis, primarily descriptive statistics but also some correlational and inferential work;
  • Participation in data collection, such as conducting interviews, administering questionnaires, facilitating focus groups, or taking field notes;
  • Basic database programming and maintenance to support data collection and analysis;
  • Providing research support to faculty engaged in investigating teaching and learning. This will include consultation on research designs (qualitative and quantitative), literature review, and data collection and analyses;
  • Supporting dissemination of project findings within and beyond ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV;
  • Undertaking literature reviews related to ISTLD publications;
  • Assisting with data entry and evaluation related to ISTLD projects’ progress/tracking;
  • Attending bimonthly ISTLD team meetings.

What you bring:

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV; preference will be given to PhD students in the first or second year of their program;
  • Excellent knowledge of research and project management principles;
  • Excellent communication (verbal, written, presentation) skills;
  • Excellent organization, time management, and project management skills;
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills;
  • Ability to work with faculty and graduate students from a wide range of disciplines;
  • Experience with quantitative data tools and analyses (e.g., SPSS, R);
  • Experience analyzing data from questionnaires, activity logs, and learning measurement tools;
  • Experience with qualitative software (e.g., NVivo), qualitative coding and analysis and linking quantitative and qualitative data;
  • Experience with social networking analysis, statistical modelling, educational measurement;
  • Experience working with computer logs or trace data;
  • Ability to undertake literature reviews in disciplines beyond own research area;
  • Skilled in use of Microsoft Office suite (e.g., MS word and Excel);
  • Expert knowledge in database and data management applications (e.g., FileMaker, Access, Zotero);
  • Experience with grant proposal writing;
  • Experience building, administering, and analyzing data from SurveyMonkey questionnaires;
  • Experience conducting focus groups, interviews, field note-taking, and classroom observations;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Experience with teaching and learning research.

Rate of pay: $22.00 - $30.00/hour (includes 4% vacation and statutory holiday pay, no medical or dental benefits), based on experience, qualifications, and degree program.

Time commitment: 10-20 hours/week, January 2020 to March 2020; hours are negotiable. Appointments to be renewed on a semester basis based on performance and available funding.
