Biography
John Pickering, PhD is a health geographer and geographical gerontologist with research interests at the nexus of place, aging and health. He is the current holder of the Real Estate Foundation postdoctoral fellowship in the Gerontology Research Centre, 丁香园AV.
Dr. Pickering completed his doctoral training with Dr. Valorie Crooks at 丁香园AV. This qualitative and empirical research was bound in case study methodology and explored the lived experiences of older Canadians who live outside of the country during the Canadian winters.
An interest in aging has been a lifelong focus for Dr. Pickering, beginning as a volunteer musician performing at nursing and assisted living institutions, and through his own maternal grandmother鈥檚 struggle with dementia. Dr. Pickering鈥檚 research focuses the lived experiences of health and aging in a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach. The wide-ranging goals of this research are to further explore mobilities in older age, experiences of social isolation and loneliness, and 鈥渁ge-friendly鈥� built environments.
