Matilda Aslizadeh鈥檚 Phantom Smile presents a suite of six fictional female faces, each in an Edenic, misty fog of celebrity and allure. Just as individuals are a DNA blend, Aslizadeh鈥檚 creations exist in a liminal, blended state between nature and culture that adds a new twist to the history of the photographic portrait. The projection of beauty in these seemingly natural, but over-developed smiles is perhaps Hollywood鈥檚 greatest gift to popular culture. Aslizadeh鈥檚 phantom smiles mirror cinema鈥檚 performative artificiality, and reference projects such as Cindy Sherman鈥檚, while providing a corrective to the overly elaborate schemes some have employed to make basic points about the nature of identity.
