Allan Sekula: This Ain’t China

October 27 – December 15, 2012
԰AV Gallery

Allan Sekula's This Ain't China is a performance-based photo/text work from 1974 that analyzes labour relations in a fast food restaurant. It consists of photographs, a diagram and accompanying text. Sekula took the idea that “a stage is a place where anything can happen” and transferred it to the workplace where “a job site is a place where anything can happen”. The exhibition also includes a more recent backlit transparency entitled Eyes Closed Assembly Line, 2010 of a Chinese factory worker, connecting the earlier project to more recent working conditions under global capitalism.

Curated by Bill Jeffries and Melanie O’Brian.
