Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV: May in Review
We have welcomed the summer semester and are excited to continue working towards a more equitable and inclusive campus environment for all. Here is a snapshot of what the Equity Office has been up to in May.
Days of Significance
In May, we observed several days of significance across the university. This included Asian Heritage Month, Jewish Heritage Month, Mental Health Week, National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), International Day of Families, International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, World. Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, Anti-Racism Awareness Week BC, Africa Day and BC AccessAbility Week.
Asian Heritage Month
Our annual Asian Heritage Month roundup of events and stories, sharing Asian heritage, culture and contributions across ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV.
Jewish Heritage Month
Our inaugural Jewish Heritage Month page sharing events and resources to celebrate Jewish heritage and culture. This page also includes resources for those experiencing antisemitism.
Equity Compass
We are currently working on our implementation plans and identifying co-leads for the first year of the Equity Compass. We will be sharing more information in the fall, including details on how to get involved.
Memorandum of Understanding with Simon Fraser Student Society
We continue to actively pursue completion of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with that allows ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV to intervene on incidents within SFSS that affect students under ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV policies and as well as as previously established. This MOU is a partnership with SFSS, given that SFSS is independent of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s legal jurisdiction and ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV cannot take over their leadership, governance or operations without specific agreement and their consensus. The draft MOU is currently with the SFSS and progressing through their internal review process. We are hopeful that the MOU will be advanced and finalized over the summer. The MOU covers the conduct of individual students, not the SFSS at large.
