New Community Consultation: Policy Authority changes for Human Rights and Bullying and Harassment Policies (GP 18 and GP 47)

February 21, 2023

This following message is sent on behalf of Francesca Hennigar, Acting General Counsel.

Dear University Faculty and Staff and Students,

Over the past year, the university has been exploring how to strengthen its commitment and response to human rights and bullying and harassment.

Responsive to a previous structural change, which required a change in the policy authority to the Vice President, People, Equity and Inclusion for the Human Rights Policy (GP 18) and the Bullying & Harassment Policy (GP 47), from December 7, 2022 to January 9, 2023 and further extended to January 23, 2023.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to submit their views to the proposed policy changes. A summary of the consultation and the feedback received is available .

To respond to this feedback, a proposal has been put forward to make the University Secretary the policy authority for both the Human Rights Policy (GP 18) and the Bullying & Harassment Policy (GP 47), and to have the Human Rights Office and the Bullying & Harassment Central Hub report to the University Secretary, once that position is permanently filled.

In the interim, the Human Rights Office and Bullying & Harassment Central Hub will remain within the Vice-President, People, Equity, Inclusion portfolio and administratively report to the Executive Director, Equity Office. As administrative reports, the Principal Consultant, Human Rights Office and Anti-Bullying Specialist will provide an overview of their offices’ activities to the People, Equity and Inclusion portfolio. They will continue to complete their work to support the community in an impartial manner, maintaining procedural fairness.

The proposed revisions to the Policy Authority for ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s Human Rights Policy (GP 18) and Bullying & Harassment Policy (GP 47), are available at . Please review and provide your input to polasst@sfu.ca before March 27, 2023.

Thank you,

Francesca Hennigar
